Patty King, a Licensed Practical Nurse at Bothwell OB/GYN Associates, has been honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses by Bothwell Regional Health Center. King is the first clinic-based nurse at Bothwell to receive this recognition.
The DAISY Award allows patients and their families to nominate nurses who provide exceptional and compassionate care. King was nominated by a patient who experienced a miscarriage and wanted to acknowledge King's support during a difficult time.
“There is nothing that could make a miscarriage a positive experience, but I know that a gruff and uncaring nurse could have made it much worse,” the patient wrote. “Patty was warm and available throughout the entire experience, answering my many questions and phone calls so patiently. She was a true liaison for me between the doctor and the hospital.”
King has worked as a clinic nurse for 30 years, with 15 of those years spent at Bothwell. She said her childhood experiences with her own nurse inspired her career choice.
“As a child, we went to Dr. David Edwards and his nurse Erma always made me feel so cared for,” she said. “That kindness really made an impression on me.”
She added that building relationships with patients is central to her work: “We get attached to our patients in good times and in hard times,” she said. “I feel blessed to have helped this patient through such a difficult experience. I love what I do, and I’m honored to be recognized.”
Megan Elwood, RN in Bothwell’s Clinical Education department, presented King with several tokens of appreciation including a certificate recognizing her as an “Extraordinary Nurse,” cinnamon rolls, flowers, an award pin, and a hand-carved sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch.” A banner honoring King will be displayed in the clinic, and her name will be listed on the DAISY Foundation website.
The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by Patrick Barnes’ family after he died from complications of an autoimmune disease; it recognizes outstanding nursing care globally across more than 6,000 health facilities in 39 countries. Bothwell Regional Health Center began participating in 2018.
Previous recipients at Bothwell include Jessica Wheeler, Shari Thomasson, Shasta Nardi, Courtney Rumans, Sarah Plante, Connie Roll, Ronda McMullin, Sarah Fredrickson, Sherri Egbert, Leslie Shapley, Seth Stotts, Stacey Nassar, Helen Fisher, Donna Cline, Linda Lower, Sarah Cordes, Reilly O’Shea, Heather Kaneko, Jenice Serrano, Emma Stone and Mattie Mergen.
