The Central Missouri Mules football team will travel to Topeka, Kansas, this Saturday to face the Washburn Ichabods in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) matchup. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Yager Stadium at Moore Bowl.
Central Missouri enters the contest with a 3-3 overall record and 3-1 in conference play. Washburn stands at 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA. The Mules are coming off a 49-32 loss to No. 18 Northwest Missouri State on October 11.
Through six games, Central Missouri leads the MIAA in scoring offense with an average of 35 points per game and total offense with 477.5 yards per game. The team is also second in passing offense, averaging 331.7 yards per game. Nationally, the Mules rank fifth in NCAA Division II for total offense.
Wide receiver Hogan Wasson is currently fourth in NCAA Division II for receptions per game with 7.8 and sixth in receiving yards per game at 102.3. Quarterback Donovyn Omolo ranks fourth nationally in completions per game (25) and fifth in total offense (326.6 yards per game).
Last season, the Mules finished with a 9-3 record, tying for third in the conference. They reached the postseason for a second consecutive year and won the Heritage Bowl Powered by RIOT against the University of Texas Permian Basin in double overtime. Over the past two seasons, Central Missouri has achieved more than 20 wins, marking only the second time in program history this has occurred.
Saturday’s broadcast will be available on several radio stations including "Your Country" 98.5 The BAR FM, "Good Time Oldies" 1450 KOKO AM, and 92.1 FM, as well as online at warrensburgradio.com. Greg Hassler will handle play-by-play duties, with former head coach Jim Svoboda providing commentary and Ryan Anderson reporting from the sidelines. The game will also be available via pay-per-view webcast on TheMIAANetwork.com/UCMMULES and televised throughout the Kansas City area on 38 The Spot.
Key players for Central Missouri this season include Latravious Boyd (running back), who has 248 rushing yards and two touchdowns; Donovyn Omolo (quarterback), with 1,396 passing yards and six touchdowns; and Hogan Wasson (wide receiver), with 614 receiving yards and three touchdowns. On defense, Garrett Hormann leads with 50 tackles.
Several Mules players have received MIAA weekly honors this season: Jack Pospisil (Offensive Athlete of the Week, September 15), Jordan Pachot (Offensive Athlete of the Week, September 22), and Donovyn Omolo (Offensive Athlete of the Week, October 6).
This year, Central Missouri added 58 new student-athletes to its roster, including 36 freshmen and 22 transfers. The coaching staff also welcomed seven new members for the season.
Saturday’s matchup marks the 54th meeting between Central Missouri and Washburn, with the Mules leading the all-time series, 30-21-2. In their last encounter, Central Missouri defeated Washburn, 31-28.
In their recent loss to Northwest Missouri State, Central Missouri initially led but ultimately fell after being outscored in the third quarter. Quarterback Donovyn Omolo recorded two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. On defense, Garrett Hormann and Abraham Hoskins III each tallied twelve tackles.
Central Missouri continues to maintain a scoring streak that has reached 356 consecutive games, a record in the MIAA dating back to the third week of the 1991 season.
The program’s history spans 129 seasons since its inception in 1895, excluding only the year 1918 due to World War I. The Mules have won or shared fourteen conference championships and made thirteen postseason appearances.
Former Central Missouri players Zach Zebrowski and Arkell Smith are currently active in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Elks. David Olajiga is on the New England Patriots’ practice squad, while Zach Davidson was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2021.
Following Saturday’s game, Central Missouri will return home to face Emporia State for their annual Homecoming Game on October 25.
