A Sedalia resident, Joni Hughes, visited Bothwell Regional Health Center’s Emergency Department to express her gratitude to the medical team who assisted her husband, Steve Hughes, during a recent emergency. Steve arrived at the department late on a Saturday night experiencing heart issues and was stabilized before being transferred to another facility early the next morning.

Joni Hughes recalled the stressful experience and highlighted the support they received from nurse Liz Faye. “Liz was an angel,” she said. “Her care was precious, and I wanted her to know how much that meant to me.”

She also thanked Dr. Nathan George for his prompt and attentive care during the crisis. Steve Hughes, known locally through his work at Bothwell Medical Equipment providing home oxygen equipment, is now recovering.

“Thanks to Dr. George and the others who cared for him, my husband is alive,” Joni said.

The gesture of appreciation moved several staff members emotionally. Mike Shipp, director of the Emergency Department, noted that while his team is trained for high-pressure situations, their compassion often leaves a lasting impact on patients and families. “Their clinical skills care for and save patients, though it’s their compassion that often stays with patients and families the most,” he said. “The compassionate and skilled care that nurses, physicians and staff provide, especially in the middle of the night in moments of fear, makes all the difference. I’m really proud of all of them and grateful that Joni recognized them this way.”

Steve and Joni Hughes recently returned to Bothwell Regional Health Center’s Emergency Department to thank Liz Faye for her role in Steve’s care during his medical emergency.
