Bothwell Regional Health Center is set to conduct Community CPR/AED and First Aid courses on March 15 at the Bothwell Education Center, located at 600 E. 14th St. The CPR/AED class will run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., focusing on teaching participants how to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants, as well as how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) for both adults and children.
An AED is described as "a small, lightweight device that allows individuals and first responders to treat sudden cardiac arrest by delivering a shock to the victim’s chest, ideally restarting their heart."
Additionally, there will be a First Aid course available from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., catering to both adults and children. These classes typically attract corporate and retail employees, security personnel, law enforcement officers, health and fitness staff, parents, and grandparents. Special arrangements can be made for large groups.
The American Heart Association reports that "more than 350,000 people experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the United States" annually with over "100,000 occurring outside the home." It is noted that "a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival can double or triple when CPR is performed correctly and used with an AED."
Each class costs $45 or $60 for those who wish to attend both sessions. Registration must be completed by March 10 with payment required upon registration. Interested individuals can obtain more information or register by contacting Bothwell Education Center via email at classes@brhc.org or by calling 660-827-9516.
