Bothwell Regional Health Center has awarded the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses to Jenice Serrano, a Registered Nurse in the hospital's Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). This award allows patients and their families to nominate nurses who provide exceptional care. Serrano was nominated by Sandra Gibson, a recent patient.

Gibson shared her experience, stating, “I was there to have my gallbladder removed and things went differently than expected, yet Jenice went above and beyond taking care of me and my daughter. When I was admitted, Jenice came to check on me before leaving to go home and brought my daughter lunch. It’s clear she gives her all in everything she does, and she made us feel so special and cared for. Jenice is a keeper and an amazing nurse.”

Serrano has been with Bothwell since May 2024. As a PACU nurse, she assists patients recovering from anesthesia after surgery or other medical procedures. She expressed that nursing is more than just a job; it is a calling that offers variety, challenges, and personal fulfillment.

“Nursing is a profession that combines hands-on care, constant learning and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others,” Serrano stated. “From the moment I considered nursing as a career, I was drawn to the dynamic and ever-changing nature of the job.”

Megan Elwood from Bothwell’s Clinical Education department presented Serrano with several items including a certificate recognizing her as an "Extraordinary Nurse," cinnamon rolls, daisy bouquet, DAISY Award pin, and "A Healer’s Touch" sculpture crafted by Shona Tribe artists in Africa. A banner honoring her will be displayed in the unit while her name will appear on the DAISY Foundation website.

Elwood commented on Serrano's contribution: “Jenice is in our Nurse Residency program. Her ability to make patients and their families feel seen and cared for is one of her special traits and exemplifies the very heart of nursing. We are so proud of her and are grateful for the difference she’s making for patients at Bothwell.”

Receiving this award was unexpected for Serrano who said it humbles her greatly: “Nursing is a profession that I am deeply passionate about...I don’t do this job for recognition—I just treat people the way I like to be treated."

The DAISY Award originated in 1999 in Glen Ellen by Patrick Barnes' family following his death due to complications from an autoimmune disease; his nurses’ care inspired its creation—DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking Immune SYstem Awards now given globally across over 6k healthcare facilities/schools spanning 39 countries/territories including Bothwell which started acknowledging nurses thusly since 2018.
