The Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) has recently announced the winners of the 2023 Department of the Air Force Design Awards, recognizing excellence in design, sustainability, and energy efficiency within the Air Force. The awards ceremony will take place during the annual AFCEC Design & Construction Partnering Symposium in San Antonio from January 30 to February 1.
Among the award-winning projects is the Consolidated Operations Building at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, which received the Merit Award in the Facilities New Construction Category. Col. George Nichols, the deputy director of AFCEC’s Facility Engineering Directorate, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the projects, stating, "The three 2023 award-winning projects demonstrate innovative and cost-effective design solutions that exceed the DAF standard for excellence."
Another recognized project is the KC-46A Two-Bay Depot Maintenance Hangar at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, which was awarded a Citation Award in the Facilities New Construction Category. Wallace Lindsey, the Air Force Design Awards program manager, emphasized that the winning designs showcased quality through a combination of functionality, sustainability, and energy efficiency. Lindsey noted, "Winning designs embodied quality through a fusion of functionality, sustainability and climate resilience, cost control, and energy efficiency."
The Red Flag 201, 5th Generation Addition at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, also received recognition with the Merit Award in the Facilities Renovations and Additions Category. The projects honored in the 2023 Department of the Air Force Design Awards program exemplify the best architecture and building design while meeting Department of Defense and Air Force criteria.
In expressing gratitude towards the team members involved in the projects and the jury responsible for evaluating submissions, Lindsey stated, "I’m tremendously thankful for team members across the enterprise who are committed to excellence in design, as well as our stellar jury members tasked with the incredible challenge of evaluating all submitted projects."
The annual DAF Design Awards program aims to highlight projects that excel in design and sustainability, aligning with the Air Force's goals of maintaining modern, mission-ready facilities for current and future operational needs.
