Team Whiteman Continues to Improve Processes

The 509th Civil Engineer Squadron’s Fire Alarm and Suppression Team, led by Clay Hudson, has made significant strides in improving processes that result in cost savings for the Air Force. By addressing issues with flame detection systems, the team has found a way to save the Air Force $68,000 a year.

According to U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Arthur Barnachea, Hudson identified the root cause of the problems affecting multiple flame detection systems and devised a cost-effective solution. Barnachea explained, "Hudson determined that the flame detection heads were out of alignment and needed to be re-calibrated." This discovery led to a crucial decision that would ultimately benefit the Air Force financially.

In an effort to streamline the maintenance process, Barnachea stated, "To streamline the process, Hudson initiated a venture to procure a test and calibration kit to allow his section to perform the required maintenance instead of relying on the manufacturer." This initiative proved to be successful, as Hudson was able to purchase a calibration kit for $827, significantly less expensive than sending each system back to the manufacturer for calibration.

Thanks to Hudson's leadership, the team can now recalibrate the flame detection systems quickly and efficiently from their office, eliminating the need for extended downtime. As Barnachea highlighted, "This would eliminate the weeks of downtime that sending the systems back to the manufacturer would have caused." This efficiency not only saves time but also reduces costs, allowing resources to be redirected to other essential maintenance tasks on the base.

Hudson emphasized that the team's initiative not only saves money but also enhances operational readiness. By optimizing processes and finding innovative solutions, the Fire Alarm and Suppression Team at Team Whiteman exemplifies the commitment of Airmen and Air Force civilians to continuous improvement.
