The 509th Security Forces Squadron has been recognized as the Best Large Security Forces Squadron in the Air Force. This accolade is a testament to the daily operational intensity and teamwork of the squadron.

Senior Master Sgt. Michael Michele, superintendent of the 509th Security Forces Squadron, emphasized the collective effort required to maintain security at Whiteman Air Force Base. "It takes a team to maintain the security posture of Whiteman Air Force Base," he stated. "I think that that package is an accumulation of everything that the defenders are doing every day, 24/7 365."

The squadron's responsibilities include securing munition assets, flightline security, and protecting both the B-2 Spirit aircraft and its crew. Their performance during Exercise Spirit Vigilance played a significant role in earning this award. The exercise tested readiness for global strike power projection, featuring a 12-ship fly-off of the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber.

Airman 1st Class Zachary Smith served as lead entry controller during a critical munitions convoy operation. He noted, "It's a humbling experience working with an asset like this (The B-2 Spirit) because we know the importance of it and getting the mission done correctly."

Master Sgt. Allen praised Smith's capabilities: “Airman Smith is a good litmus test for the type of Defenders that we have available. He's motivated, he's blue, he's strong, he's capable." Smith was also chosen as lead trainer for entry control operators due to his dedication.

Master Sgt. Joshua Allen highlighted Smith's contributions: “Airman Smith's character is reflective of what we believe are the traits that helped us to win and be the best Security Forces Squadron in the Air Force.”

Michele concluded by saying, “When we win an award like this, it shows everyone, including our adversaries, that we really are ready, anytime, anywhere.”
