Two second-half goals by Grand Valley State led to a 2-1 victory over the University of Central Missouri Jennies Soccer team on Sunday afternoon in Allendale, Michigan. The match took place at the GVSU Soccer Field and featured two nationally ranked teams: No. 4 Grand Valley State and No. 17 Central Missouri.
Central Missouri started strong, taking an early lead just three minutes into the game. Aspen Patterson scored her first goal of the season with assists from Mikayla Ernst and Gracie Knight. The Jennies held onto their advantage until nine minutes into the second half, when Alli French equalized for Grand Valley State in the 54th minute.
Grand Valley State went ahead ten minutes later with a goal from Ivy Wilhelm in the 64th minute. After falling behind, Central Missouri managed only one more shot, which was saved by Lakers goalkeeper Macie Hunter.
Patterson led Central Missouri’s offense with her goal and two shots on target. Goalkeeper Kristen Wright made six saves but allowed two goals over 90 minutes for the Jennies, whose record moved to 1-2-1. For Grand Valley State (3-1-0), Hunter earned the win after making one save in relief during the second half.
The Lakers outshot Central Missouri by a margin of 19-7 overall and had an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. They also won more corner kicks, finishing with an 11-2 advantage.
Central Missouri will play its home opener against Ouachita Baptist on Friday, September 19 at the South Recreation Complex in Warrensburg.
