Bothwell Regional Health Center and the University of Missouri School of Medicine have welcomed two new resident physicians, Dr. Hayden Hackman and Dr. Joseph Stegman, to the Bothwell-University of Missouri Rural Family Medicine Residency program.

The three-year residency trains family physicians in rural health care settings. Hackman and Stegman will spend their first year training in Sedalia and Columbia, with the following two years based full-time in Sedalia.

Dr. Hackman is from Glasgow, Missouri, and received his medical degree from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. He cited early experiences with family physicians and an interest in anatomy and biology as influences on his decision to pursue medicine.

“Bothwell stood out to me because I felt it would be easy to form strong relationships with attending physicians, which creates a better learning environment,” Hackman said. “Being from a small town, I knew living in Sedalia would be something I would enjoy.”

Hackman chose family medicine for its broad scope and opportunities across specialties. He plans to gain experience with procedures during residency and prepare for a future practice that includes obstetric care for patients of all ages.

“I am passionate about addressing the obesity epidemic,” he said. “I enjoy learning and teaching about diet and exercise, and I’m excited to combine lifestyle education with new medical treatments to improve patient health.”

Dr. Stegman is from Washington, Kansas, and earned his medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He was drawn to medicine by a lifelong interest in science as well as mentorship experiences.

“I wanted residency training geared toward rural practice with strong obstetrics and procedural experience,” Stegman said. “Bothwell’s full-scope training aligns well with my goals to be the kind of physician who can handle any problem my patients bring.”

Stegman's interests include endoscopy, obstetrics, and other procedures. After completing his residency, he hopes to serve as a trusted physician in a rural Kansas community.

“Access to health care is the issue I have the most experience with, especially in rural areas,” he said. “Specialists or resources might be hours away in the closest city, so I plan to be equipped to help bridge that gap for my future patients.”

Dr. Misty Todd serves as residency director at Bothwell Cole Camp Clinic and praised both new residents.

“Dr. Hackman and Dr. Stegman bring passion for rural medicine and a desire to make meaningful connections with patients,” Todd said. “They each have unique strengths and a commitment to learning, which fits well with our mission to prepare family physicians to serve rural communities.”

Hackman and Stegman join current residents Dr. ShiAnne Farris, Dr. Logan Stiens, Dr. Jamie Spears, and Dr. Gabriel Dudley—all accepting new patients at Bothwell Family Medicine Associates.
