For the fourth consecutive year, Bothwell Regional Health Center and Pettis County Ambulance District organized a Time Critical Diagnosis Summit. The event, held on June 10, was aimed at medical professionals involved in emergency care for patients with life-threatening conditions such as stroke, STEMI, or traumatic injuries.

Michele Laas, Chief Nursing Officer at Bothwell, emphasized the importance of this professional development opportunity. "Incidents like stroke, trauma and STEMI are highly time-sensitive," she stated. "The faster these conditions are identified and treated, the better the chances of survival and recovery."

The summit covered various topics including dizziness causes, acute coronary syndrome care, traumatic brain injuries management, hypertension's impact on the heart, pediatric trauma bleeding control, pelvic fractures handling, and chest tube management.

Speakers included Tom Modin from St. Luke’s Health System; Steven Mackay from Missouri Heart Center; Jeffrey Coughenour from MU Health Care; Tim Woods from CoxHealth South; Alisha Lawson from MU Air Medical Services; Jennifer Flint from Children’s Mercy Hospital; Evan Stout from Bothwell Orthopedics and Sports Medicine; and Trevor Beckham from Surgical Services of Sedalia.

More than 30 participants attended for hands-on training and continuing education credits. Laas noted that the summit supports Bothwell's mission to improve community health and reduce preventable deaths.

Lt. Col. Tim Woods spoke at the summit about his experiences as a military trauma surgeon. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 13 years before joining CoxHealth in 2006. During his deployment at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany during the Iraq War, he cared for many critically injured service members.

Woods was invited by Mike Shipp of Bothwell’s Emergency Department to share his expertise in trauma care. Reflecting on his service at Landstuhl where he treated Marcus Luttrell among others, Woods said it was an honor to serve those who risked their lives.

Currently serving in the Missouri Air National Guard since 2017, Woods is also involved with C-STARS at St. Louis University School of Medicine where he trains Air Force medical personnel preparing for deployment.

“It is a great honor to serve our country,” Woods remarked about his career contributions both domestically and abroad.
