The United States Air Force is seeking to inspire a new generation of innovators and thinkers to secure the nation's future amidst complex geopolitical and technological challenges. At a recent STEM event held in collaboration with California Polytechnic State University in Pasadena, senior leaders from the 509th Bomb Wing highlighted the importance of STEM education and the military's dedication to nurturing young talent.

Col. Keith Butler, commander of the 509th Bomb Wing, emphasized the need for innovation in his address: “It's crucial that all competition in international conflicts remains on the diplomatic and economic fronts,” he stated. “If, after all efforts, we still can’t find common ground, we must be prepared. That’s where innovation comes in.”

Butler shared his personal journey through over 30 years of military service, illustrating how the Air Force provided him with educational and career opportunities. He began as an enlisted airman and earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree while serving. Now, he encourages young people to consider joining the military for personal growth and exploration.

“We need smart folks who can innovate and help us understand how we can improve,” Butler added. “If you want to be part of our nation’s security and have opportunities to travel, the military could be the place for you.”

This call for innovation coincides with Air Force B-2 bombers flying over the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game, blending military prowess with community spirit. Butler reflected on his childhood experiences watching the parade in Pasadena: “My family used to camp out the night before the Rose Parade just to get a good view,” he recalled. “To now be in charge of the B-2s flying over this event is a dream come true.”

The message resonated with CAL POLY students and administrators involved in STEM fields. Butler encouraged them to contribute their fresh ideas: “Relying solely on ‘old heads’ to drive innovation is not the answer,” he noted. “We need your ideas and talents to ensure we’re headed in the right direction.”

The event was filled with enthusiasm as students interacted with military personnel, eager to learn about contributing to national security and technological advancements.

As global challenges grow, this call from the Air Force highlights youth's critical role in shaping future innovations. With a focus on collaboration, they aim not only to maintain their status as a global superpower but also actively engage young minds in steering history's course.
