On October 16, B-2 Spirit bombers from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri executed precision strikes against underground weapons storage sites controlled by the Houthi militia in Yemen. This operation highlighted the United States' global strike capabilities.
Major General Jason R. Armagost, commander of the 8th Air Force and Joint-Global Strike Operations Center (J-GSOC), stated, "As the warfighting component to U.S. Strategic Command, our Airmen and aircraft are ready to respond anytime, anywhere."
The mission involved a total force effort with contributions from the 509th Bomb Wing, 131st Bomb Wing, and J-GSOC. Total Force Airmen at Whiteman AFB, including both active-duty and Air National Guard personnel, collaborated across various operations to ensure the success of the mission.
Colonel Keith J. Butler, commander of the 509th Bomb Wing, remarked on the mission's success: "This mission was the result of hard work, long hours, and dedication by many across the installation... Team Whiteman answered the nation's call with precision, professionalism and outstanding performance."
The J-GSOC planners were integral in developing action plans that coordinated support and intelligence requirements across six combatant commands. Armagost praised their efforts: “I couldn’t be more proud of the dedication, professionalism and hard work... Whether we are called upon to conduct indefinite strategic deterrence operations or execute decisive global strikes, the J-GSOC will remain agile and ready.”
The partnership between active-duty forces and Guardsmen played a crucial role in achieving credible deterrence capabilities. Colonel Jared Kennish of the 131st Bomb Wing emphasized this collaboration: “This was a team effort in all aspects of the mission... The total force relationships... proved decisive for a successful mission."
The B-2 bombers demonstrated their advanced capabilities through this operation. Colonel Butler addressed members at Whiteman AFB saying: "We continue to stay ready... Team Whiteman is an elite, highly disciplined team... working in unison to deliver global strike… anytime, anywhere.”
