Cedar County officials announced on Mar. 18 that the first installment of the county’s 2020 tax overcollection payback has been mailed to residents. Each parcel owner will receive a card representing their share, with many cards containing less than one dollar.

The repayment only involves the general revenue tax levy, and does not affect the school’s portion. The calculation for distribution is based on dividing $1.2 million by more than 18,000 parcels and then dividing by four.

Officials emphasized the importance of promptly retrieving these cards from mailboxes and using them. “It is important that you receive what you are owed,” the press release said. If a card is not redeemed, it does not revert back to the county; instead, unclaimed funds are eventually returned to individuals through Missouri’s unclaimed property process if left unused for over a year.

Cardholders can transfer their cash value to bank accounts or payment platforms such as Venmo or PayPal. Any management or consolidation of cards must be handled directly with Rapid Financial support staff at 877-287-2448. Residents experiencing issues are encouraged to contact Rapid Financial support and speak with a live representative for assistance.

The Cedar County Courthouse does not have access to assist with these payments, as all funds were transferred to Rapid Financial, whose staff are trained specifically for handling the 2020 tax fund cards. The release clarified: “To clarify even though the pamphlet states there will be fees, THERE ARE NO FEES INCURRED UNTIL AFTER A FULL YEAR!”

This process aims to ensure taxpayers receive any amounts owed from the overcollection in an accessible manner while providing clear instructions on how to manage or claim their funds.
